MANILA, Philippines Two armed men killed a municipal councilor of Placer town in Masbate province right in front of the victim's house Thursday evening, local police said.
Councilor Michael Sivelleno, 47, succumbed to bullet wounds in different parts of his body.
Bicol Regional Police Offices spokesperson Inspector Ayan Natuel said the victim was standing in their front yard in Barangay Pasiagun at around 8:30 p.m. when two armed men attacked him, pumping 10 bullets into his body.
He said the assailants casually walked away from the crime scene after making sure Sivelleno was dead.
Police are tracking down the killers, Natuel said, adding, We haven't actually established why he was killed but politics is one of the angles being considered."
On Thursday, the Philippine National Police came out with a list of possible hotspots in the coming 2010 elections Masbate is one of the seven areas the PNP has identified.
Aside from Masbate, the PNP has identified the provinces of Nueva Ecija, Abra, Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao and Sulu as possible election hotspots due to their history of election violence.
