Liquid nitrogen plant built in Masbate

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) has turned over a P6.5-million mini liquid nitrogen generating plant to the local government of Masbate City to help local cattle raisers in breeding the livestock.

Agriculture Undersecretary for Livestock Jose Reaño said the availability of liquid nitrogen is one of the logistical components of the DA’s artificial insemination program as it is vital for proper storing and transporting of animal semen.

Artificial insemination is one of the strategies to improve genetics and breed of livestock, Reaño added.

The facility, which was constructed inside the compound of Masbate Fish Complex and Bus terminal, will be operated by the city government and will serve members of the Cattle Raisers Association of Masbate Inc.

Reaño also approved cattle raisers’ requests to establish an animal diagnostic laboratory in the province, committing P3 million for the establishment of the facility and the purchase of the necessary equipment including an electro semen ejaculator which shall determine if the semen of bulls are still viable.

"The site for the laboratory has yet to be determined but this has to be under the supervision of the DA regional office," he said.

Dr. Grace Cenas, National Dairy Authority administrator, noted that Masbate has great potential for dairy development, adding that their office is ready to support the island province in this undertaking.

Cenas said a scheme is now being implemented wherein livestock breeds for meat production will be crossbred with dairy breeds.

"NDA will buy the offspring for milking purposes and later when there are enough dairy animals in the island , the establishment of milk processing or dairy plants will subsequently follow,” she said.
