Solon unhurt as gunmen fire at Masbate home

MANILA, Philippines - Unidentified armed men fired shots at the home of Masbate Rep. Rizalina Seachon-Lanete in Bicol early Tuesday morning but the lawmaker was unhurt, police said.

Initial investigation showed that while no one in her household was reported hurt, the shooting damaged the gate and walls of the house.

Superintendent Jeffrey Fernandez, chief of the Masbate City Police, said two men on a motorcycle were responsible for the shooting that transpired 2:30 a.m. in Ibingay village in Masbate City.

The identities of the assailants, however, were not immediately available. The suspects used .45-caliber pistols in the attack.

Fernandez said the lawmaker has asked for additional security personnel following the attack.

"It seems that the gunmen fired at the house while the motorcycle was moving. One of the witnesses said that he saw two men aboard a motorcycle leaving the area a few seconds after the shooting," Fernandez said.

He added that authorities are still determining whether the New People's Army is behind the incident. The communists were earlier blamed for the attack against Masbate Governor Elisa Kho early this year.

Fernandez said the shooting could likely be politically-motivated. - GMANews.TV
